GSI to spearhead £1.2m “world class” research project
GSI Group Laser Division is to launch a £1.2m collaborative research and development project in partnership with the LPA Group at Heriot-Watt University, PowerPhotonic Ltd. and Cranfield University, thanks to investment from the Technology Strategy Board. The project will aim to advance fibre coupled diode laser technology.

Second Bystronic 6 Kw Laser for Precision Profiles
18 months after commissioning the UK’s first 6 kW Bystronic Bystar 3015 laser cutting system, Precision Profiles Laser Division has placed an order with Bystronic UK Limited for a second similar system, only this time the machine features the 4 x 2.5 m bed size. The order is valued at in excess of £500,000.

Investment tops £2M mark
SSC Laser (formerly Steel Service Centre), the all round laser cutting sub-contractor, has placed an order with Bystronic UK Limited for equipment valued at in excess of £350,000 for a Bystronic Byspeed laser cutting system equipped with 4.4 kW resonator. It is the sixth Bystronic laser (and the third Byspeed) to be purchased by the company since 2000 and represents an overall investment of over £2M.

Trumpf's 'head' for automation helps microkerf
A Leicester-based laser cutting subcontractor that claims to offer the most diverse profiling service in the country has ordered a new TruLaser 5030 CNC laser profiling centre from Trumpf complete with single head technology and 5kW TruFlow laser. Microkerf will now process material ranging from 0.025mm shim steel up to 25mm thick steel jobs.

New highly efficient and compact gas laser line allows IPG to enter additional markets and applications
IPG Photonics, a world leader in high-power fibre lasers and amplifiers, announced today that it has developed an advanced new family of CO2 gas lasers that will allow the Company to enter new markets and applications. The first generation of IPG's CO2 gas lasers, with output powers from 1 to 3 kW and operating in the 10.6 µm wavemength range, are more efficient and compact than conventional CO2 lasers now on the market, and are ideal for processing non-metal materials.
