Chair: Bethan Smith (MTC)
Laser safety is of paramount importance to ensure that the laser can be a manufacturing tool that is implemented widely and not considered a high-risk technology. Modern PPE, guarding and accessories make laser safety possible in a research or manufacturing environment.
What should be considered to enable the safe use of lasers? It is not only about the laser beam, which can be stopped using interlocks, guarding and PPE. Other risks are also significant. Laser processes, like conventional processes, generate fume that is hazardous to the operators and any personnel nearby. There are other risks to consider too.
This workshop will set out the latest amendents to the laser safety standards, discuss the latest evolutions of PPE for laser processing and consider how automation is a good alternative to reducing the skill required and the risk to operators when using hand held laser welders.
Who should attend?:
Anyone with a safety role in an organisation where lasers are currently in use (or being considered for use).
Anyone about to buy or currently using a hand held laser system.
Anyone interested in ensuring that the safety in their workplace is up to date
The 2025 AILU AGM will follow this workshop, from 13:30 – 14:30 (see here).

The Dynamic Beam Shaping for High-Power Laser Welding workshop, held at WMG, University of Warwick, on January 28, 2025, officially launched the Lasers4MaaS project, a pioneering initiative under the European Union’s HORIZON Europe program.
Civan Lasers is proud to announce that Mechanical Engineering Professor Lianyi Chen from the University of Wisconsin-Madison has become the first researcher to acquire a Dynamic Beam Laser (DBL) for Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing.
Mate Tooling Solutions in Northampton has launched a biodegradable, 100% recyclable slat coating to reduce the frequency with which laser cutters need to change their slats.
Lantek launches v44 of its sheet metal software solutions, giving the next level of connectivity, real-time insights and smart manufacturing.
PowerPhotonic is taking part in a collaborative research project with industrial and academic partners to develop a new type of laser welding process to help optimise EV (Electric Vehicle) battery casings.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Jonathan Lawrence, a distinguished leader in laser engineering, on 14th July 2024 while on holiday in Crete, Greece. Long-time friends and ex-colleagues Pratik Shukla and David Waugh (both MTC), and Dave MacLellan (AILU) share their thoughts.
Northern Ireland-based engineering company Hutchinson is making a significant investment in new equipment to further boost its productivity and support planned growth, including the creation of 57 new jobs.
TRUMPF and US software company SiMa.ai have signed a partnership to develop lasers with artificial intelligence (AI). The goal is to equip several TRUMPF laser systems with AI technology in the near future.
